~ Chapter 1 Excerpt ~

 

…Remembering the foul smell of that creature, the child looked about the village and found no sanctuary as he witnessed the overwhelming chaos and sounds of war. Watching the brutal exchange of bloody blows between shadowy figures as well as hearing the cries of agony and anguish, the child had now realized the intentions of the assailants.
Then, the boy's wrist had quickly been changed from his mother's grasp to a man and woman who he recognized as their neighbors. Hastily kneeling down beside the child, his mother kissed his forehead with tears in her eyes and told him, "Remember…we will always love you." Quickly rising from his side, all the care and understanding that had filled the woman just a short time before had now left her eyes as she focused on the neighbors' faces and sternly commanded, "Get him to safety and stay hidden!"
The child then watched as she skillfully wielded the blade from her side and transformed from his tender mother into a fierce warrior as she rushed to her husband's side in battle for the safety of the village. Hurried towards the shadowy cover of the woods, under the guidance of his new guardians, the boy watched as other people fled with their children into the darkness of the tree line...
